When Dad's Away - Cuando papá está lejos

It was very early. The sun had risen slightly behind the window. Hazina turned on the light and told her son, "Good morning, Kena! Get dressed quickly and let’s have breakfast. We have to go get dad from the airport."

Era muy temprano. El sol asomaba, apenas, detrás de la ventana. Hazina encendió la luz y dijo a su hijo, “¡Buenos días, Kena! Vístete pronto y ven a desayunar. Tenemos que ir a buscar a papá al aeropuerto”.

On the way to the airport, Kena asked his mother, "My friends’ dads always come home every day. Why we do not see dad sometimes for months?"

En camino al aeropuerto, Kena preguntó a su madre, “Los padres de mis amigos vuelven a casa todos los días. ¿Por qué nosotros no vemos a papá a veces por meses enteros?”

"Dad is an engineer on an oil rig," Hazina said. "He digs holes in the sea to get oil, and sends it to land. That way, people can drive their cars and airplanes can fly."

“Papá es ingeniero en una planta petrolífera”, dijo Hazina. “Él cava hoyos en el mar, para obtener petróleo y enviarlo a tierra. Así, la gente puede conducir sus autos y los aviones pueden volar”.

A long line of passengers came down the escalator. Kena's heart throbbed every time he saw a tall, stocky hyena. After long minutes, the dear face of Babum showed up.

Una fila larga de pasajeros descendía por la escalera mecánica. El corazón de Kena palpitaba cada vez que veía una hiena alta y fornida. Tras largos minutos, el rostro querido de Babum apareció.

Hazina told Kena, “Go, give dad a hug!” But suddenly, Kena felt angry. The cub didn’t understand very well why, but he felt like his heart was being squeezed, and a scowl covered his face.

Hazina dijo a Kena, “¡Ve a abrazar a papá!” Pero, de pronto, Kena se sintió enojado. El cachorro no entendía bien por qué, pero sentía su corazón como apretado, y una expresión enfurruñada cubrió su cara.

Back home, Babum started asking Kena about school, his friends, his turtle Lara ... But Kena stubbornly looked out the window and answered with the fewest possible words.

De regreso a casa, Babum comenzó a hacer preguntas a Kena sobre la escuela, los amigos, su tortuga Lara... Pero Kena miraba obstinadamente por la ventana y respondía con las mínimas palabras posible.

That night, when Babum tucked Kena into his bed, the cub’s heart began to thaw a little. "I'm glad you're here," Kena finally said.

Esa noche, cuando Babum fue a arropar a Kena en su cama, el corazón del cachorro comenzó a deshelar un poco. “¡Me alegro que estés aquí!” dijo finalmente Kena.

"Of course, son! Tomorrow is Father's Day. I wouldn’t miss this for anything in the world!” said Babum. He kissed his son goodnight and left the room.

“¡Por supuesto, hijo! Mañana es el día del padre. No me perdería esta reunión por nada del mundo”, respondió Babum. Dio las buenas noches a su hijo y se fue del cuarto.

"I think Kena is mad at me," Babum told his wife. "I think that Kena needs to know that you keep him in your thoughts and care about him, even if you’re not here,” said Hazina.

“Me parece que Kena está enojado conmigo”, dijo Babum a su esposa. “Creo que lo que Kena necesita es saber que lo tienes siempre en tu mente y te preocupas por él, aunque no estés aquí”, respondió Hazina.

Although the light was already off, Babum’s eyes remained wide open while he thought about his wife’s words.

Aunque la luz del cuarto estaba ya apagada, los ojos de Babum se quedaron fijamente abiertos, mientras pensaba en las palabras de su mujer.

The next day, Hazina was busy setting the house up ready for the party. Babum approached Kena with a photo album and said, "I want to show you some pictures of the sea and the place where I live."

Al día siguiente, Hazina estaba muy ocupada preparando la casa para la fiesta. Babum se acercó a Kena con un álbum de fotos, y le dijo, “Quiero mostrarte fotos del mar y el lugar donde vivo”.

Kena thought the photos looked very interesting. It was hard to imagine such a strange house; with cranes, seagulls on the deck, and people dressed in overalls all the time. It was very weird, but also fascinating.

A Kena las fotos le parecieron muy interesantes. Resultaba difícil imaginarse una casa tan rara; con grúas, gaviotas sobre la cubierta, gente vistiendo en mamelucos todo el tiempo... Era muy extraño, pero interesante también.

Finally, Kena saw the photo of the cabin, the room where Babum slept. The walls were covered with photos of the family. There were many pictures of Kena, and piles of drawings that Kena had mailed to his dad.

Finalmente, Kena vió la foto del camarote, el cuarto donde Babum dormía. Las paredes estaban empapeladas con fotos de la familia. Había muchas fotos de Kena, y montones de dibujos que Kena había enviado por correo a su papá.

When Kena saw that picture, it was as if someone opened the door to the small, airless room where his heart was, and let in a warm and silky breeze.

Cuando Kena vió esa foto, fue como si alguien abriera la puerta de un cuarto pequeño en el que su corazón estaba apretado y sin aire, y por allí se colara una brisa tibia y refrescante.

Grandparents, uncles, and cousins finally arrived for the party. They talked animatedly, and then made a toast to the fathers. Everyone was very happy to see Babum again. But the happiest of all was, of course, little Kena.

Los abuelos, tíos y primos llegaron finalmente a la fiesta. Conversaron animadamente, e hicieron un brindis los padres. Todos estaban muy contentos de ver a Babum otra vez. Pero el más contento de todos era, por supuesto, Kena.
