EL RECHAZO DE AZU

AZU’S COLD SHOULDER

El reloj sobre la pared del aula daba las nueve y cincuenta. “¡Qué bueno!” pensó Kena. “Unos minutos más y ¡al recreo! Se me ocurrió un juego nuevo que a Azu le va a encantar”.

The clock on the classroom’s wall read nine-fifty. “Great!” Kena thought. “Just a few minutes until recess! I came up with a new game idea that Azu will love.”

Azu, la mejor amiga de Kena, estaba sentada muy cerca de él, pero ese día apenas lo había mirado una o dos veces.

Cuando sonó la campana del recreo todos los cachorros salieron veloces por la puerta.

Azu, Kena’s best friend, sat near him, but that day she just glanced at him quickly once or twice.

When the recess bell rang, all the cubs ran swiftly out the door.

“Juguemos a La Avalancha, Azu”, dijo Kena. “El juego es así: me subo a la cima del tobogán y empujo la mochila cuesta abajo. Tú tienes que correr adelante, y pedir a gritos socorro”.

“Let’s play Avalanche!” said Kena. “Here’s how it goes: I climb up the slide, and from the top, I push down my backpack. You have to run in front of it, screaming for help.”

“¡Vete!” le respondió Azu, con la cara colorada por la emoción. “¡No quiero jugar contigo!”

La sorpresa de Kena fue tan grande que no atinó a decir nada.

“Go away!” said Azu, her face flushed with emotion. “I don’t want to play with you!”

Kena was so surprised that he didn’t know how to respond.

Kena volvió de la escuela, cabizbajo y pensativo.

“¿Por qué esa cara tan larga, Kena?” preguntó Hazina a su hijo.

“Azu no quiso jugar conmigo, hoy”, dijo el cachorro. “Me echó y me ignoró todo el día”.

Kena left school downcast and sad.

“Why do you have such a long face?” Hazina asked her son.

“Azu didn't want to play with me today,” said the cub. “She kicked me out and ignored me all day long.”

“No te preocupes, Kena”, dijo Hazina. “Cuando un amigo no quiere jugar es una buena oportunidad para descubrir nuevos juegos y amigos. Puedes construir un castillo de Legos, leer un libro, o jugar con otros cachorros”.

“Don’t worry, Kena,” Hazina said. “When a friend doesn’t want to play, it’s a good opportunity to discover new games and friends. You can build a castle with Legos, read a book, or play with some other cubs.”

Al día siguiente, durante el recreo, Kena fue a la biblioteca y se puso a leer El maravilloso mundo de las ballenas. Kena quedó fascinado con las ilustraciones e ideó un proyecto para realizar más tarde en casa.

The next day during recess, Kena went to the library and read The Wonderful World of Whales. Kena was struck by the illustrations, and came up with a great project idea to try later at home.

Mateo, un cachorro, alto y delgado, se acercó a Kena y lo invitó a jugar. Jugaron a La Avalancha. Mateo resultó ser un excelente compañero de juegos. Añadía todo el tiempo detalles creativos y divertidos a los juegos.

Mateo, a tall, slim cub, came by asking to play. They played Avalanche. It turned out that Mateo was an excellent playmate. He always added creative and fun details to the games.

Al final del día, Azu se acercó a Kena y le dijo, “¡Mira lo que me ha ocurrido, Kena!” Azu abrió la boca para mostrar a Kena el diente que había perdido. “Me parece muy feo…"

At the end of the school day, Azu came up to Kena and told him, “Look what happened to me, Kena!” She opened her mouth to show a missing tooth. "I think it looks ugly..."

“¡Gracias a Dios, Azu! Como no me hablabas, me preocupé… Pensé que había hecho algo malo”, dijo Kena. Sonriendo y agitando la mano en despedida, agregó: “Pienso que aún eres muy bonita”.

"Thank God, Azu! When you wouldn't talk to me at all, I was worried… I thought that I´d done something wrong.” Smiling and waving goodbye, Kena added, “I think you´re still pretty!"

De regreso a casa, Hazina preguntó a Kena, “¿Cómo fue tu día, querido?” El cachorro respondió, “¡Grandioso, mamá! Ahora sé que Azu no está enojada conmigo, y además hice un amigo nuevo”.

On their way home, Hazina asked Kena, “How was your day, dear?” The cub answered, “It was great, Mom! Now I know that Azu isn’t mad at me, and I also made a new friend.”

Cuando pasaron por la tienda de Don Marcus, Kena dijo a su madre, “¿Podemos parar a comprar unas cosas mamá? Cuando lleguemos a casa, quiero hacer un proyecto muy chévere que se me ocurrió más temprano”.

As they passed Mr. Marcu’s store, Kena asked Hazina, “Can we stop by to get a few things, Mom? When we get home, I want to do a cool project that I thought of earlier.”

“Mi proyecto se llama: ‘Una ballena por dentro’”, dijo Kena. “Necesito una sandía para rebanarla al medio, una cereza para el corazón, un poco de berenjena para el hígado, escarbadientes para la columna y los huesos”.

“The name of my project is ‘The Inside of a Whale,’” explained Kena. “I need a watermelon to slice in half, a cherry for the heart, some eggplant for the liver, and toothpicks for the bones and spine.”

Kena seguía enumerando los detalles de su proyecto, mientras su mamá pensaba, “¡Cuánto ha crecido este cachorro en un solo día!”

Kena kept listing the details of his project, while Hazina thought, “How much this cub has grown over the course of one day!"
